Carl Andre
Carl Andre (Quincy, Massachusetts, 1935 – New York, 2024) ha vissuto e lavorato a New York.
Andre è stato uno degli artisti più influenti della sua generazione, noto per aver ampliato i limiti concettuali della scultura. Mentre condivideva uno studio con Frank Stella a New York, all'inizio della sua pratica artisica, Andre iniziò una delle sue prime serie di opere composte, ovvero delle poesie dattiloscritte. Queste poesie usavano parole e lettere come fossero materiali scultorei, che venivano spesso raccolte da giornali e altre forme di letteratura. Queste opere hanno anticipato la pratica dell'artista come scultore e prefigura le sue sculture del primo piano: sia le opere su carta che le successive sculture dimostrano l'importanza della ripetizione nella pratica dell'artista e la sua predilezione per la riappropriazione dei materiali esistenti, tagliandoli e ricomponendoli.
Le opere di Andre fanno parte delle collezioni museali di tutto il mondo: Tate Modern, Londra; Centre George Pompidou, Parigi; Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, Venezia; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam e MoMA, New York.
