The Artist
Giulia Cenci (Cortona, 1988) graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, IT (2007-2012), received a Master of Fine Arts at St. Joost Academy, Den Bosch-Breda, NL (2013-2015) and she took part in deAteliers residency, Amsterdam, NL (2015-2017). The artist lives and work between Amsterdam and Tuscany.
In her process of observation Giulia Cenci selects elements that are irrelevant details of industrial objects or parts of our environment, capable of expressing transitory qualities, vulnerabilities, promises, and failures of human activities. The structure of society (with its complex regulation and infrastructures), the condition of one’s self in a contemporaneity defined by a globalized culture that expresses itself through products and avatars, all evoke in the artist visions of hypothetical habitats: here overproduction merges with its own source materials and with a weird population of prototypes coming from the wild and the domesticated realm, in an attempt to create environments devoid hierarchies, species, genders and dominance.
Cenci participated in the 59th Venice Biennale 2022, The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani, she was one of the shortlisted artists for the Maxxi Bulgari Prize 2020, and she won the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel 2019.
