Carla Accardi
MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique is delighted to present the work of Carla Accardi for the first time in its rue de Turenne space. Working hand in hand with the artist and her Foundation for over fifteen years, Illusione is the gallery’s second solo exhibition dedicated to Carla Accardi, following Carla Acardi at Home, that graced the rooms of Casa Corbellini-Wasserman in Milan in 2021.
Accardi’s decade-spanning career saw her experimenting with various mediums and formats, ranging from sicofoil to ceramics and canvas. Growing up in post-war Italy, Accardi is one of the few women of her generation to be recognized for her pioneering artistic practice and political commitment. Her work is strongly informed by her acute self-awareness: in abstraction, Accardi found a formal vocabulary that allowed her to question artifice against truth, symbolism and rationality.
After an extended period experimenting with the plasticity of sicofoil in the 1980’s, Accardi turned to the more rugged, organic features of the hemp canvas, giving way to her iconic interwoven, color block canvases.
At first glance, Illusione appears to be a haphazard sequence of 12 identical canvases. Yet their order and combination is as precise as a mathematical formula, coherent in one precise layout only.
Each sign transcends the border of its individual rectangular canvas, creating an interwoven patterns across the work. The shapes are ornamental and rhythmical at once. One against the other, her color fields create a high contrast effect, whilst appearing connected in harmony by the homogeneous linen canvas background. A sense of flow emerges from the intertwining shapes, and the negative forms that emerge from each color.
The illusion of simplicity, or the simplicity of illusion, thus unfolds horizontally across the twelve canvases, hinting at a secret code perhaps, or spelling out a message that Accardi only holds the key to.
Carla Accardi’s work has been selected by Cecilia Alemani for the Venice Biennale’s exhibition “The Milk of Dreams” on view till November in the Giardini dell’Arsenale.

Carla Accardi (1924 - 2014) è stata una delle più importanti esponenti della pittura astratta nel secondo dopoguerra in Italia. Nata il 9 Ottobre 1924 a Trapani, ha studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze prima di trasferirsi a Roma nel 1946, dove ha fondato l’influente gruppo Forma 1 (1947-51), principale riferimento per l’arte astratta in Italia negli anni ’40 e ’50.
I suoi primi dipinti erano caratterizzati da forme geometriche ad incastro. Nel 1950, Accardi fu coinvolta nell’ondata rivoluzionaria dell’astrazione attraverso l'ibridazione della pittura geometrica e gestuale, sia in Italia che in Francia, dove il critico d'arte Michel Tapié si interessò al suo lavoro.
Nel 1953 Accardi inizia a introdurre i segni pseudo-calligrafici nelle immagini astratte, riducendo la sua tavolozza a composizioni bianco e nero per esplorare il rapporto fra figura e sfondo.
Negli anni '60, invece, c’è un rinnovamento del colore nelle sue opere con riferimenti alla cultura metropolitana ed effetti ottici. La ricerca artistica di Accardi fu caratterizzata da una continua radicale sperimentazione con l’uso di supporti in plastica trasparente che accentuavano la natura del dipinto come diaframma luminoso. Nel 1961, infatti, iniziò a dipingere su sicofoil, una plastica trasparente, invece che sulla tela. Mostrò queste nuove tecniche pittoriche alla Biennale di Venezia del 1964. Dalla metà del 1960, invece, utilizzò questi nuovi materiali in modo scultoreo. Questa fase dell’opera di Accardi, la quale fu celebrata nella sezione Ambient Art della Biennale di Venezia del 1976, voleva mostrare l’influenza dell’Arte Povera. Nel 1980 Accardi ritornerà alla tela e sposterà la sua attenzione sull’uso dei segni e le giustapposizioni cromatiche. Nel 1988 parteciperà di nuovo alla Biennale di Venezia, mentre nel 1994 prenderà parte all’ Italia metamorfosi 1943 -1968, tenuta al Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York nel 1994.
Il suo lavoro fa parte di importanti collezioni, tra cui la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna a Roma, il Museo d’Arte Contemporanea del Castello di Rivoli (Torino), le Gallerie Civiche di Modena e Bologna, il Palazzo Reale a Milano, e il Museo Civico a Torino. L’artista è deceduta a Roma il 23 Febbraio 2014.
