For years it had been a cherished dream, tucked away in the corner. Over time many ideas had piled up around it: about marks, forms, colors, inten- tions. A virtual conversation in my head. Some day I’ll do it. Then history came crashing in, and now we have virtual exhibitions. A necessity? More like an opportunity. The time is right. The cross-generational juxtaposition of Carla Accardi and Landon Metz offers a glimpse of how a certain guiding thread in art has always had the energy and courage to transcend differences in era, geography and culture: painting. The dialogue between them shows that this visual medium par excellence, which at one point was fiercely criticized and even sidelined, has made a powerful comeback with new forms of experimentation, reinterpreting practices of the past that continue to inspire the present.
Carla Accardi is one of the greatest figures in Italian abstract art. She was born in Trapani in 1924 and died in Rome in 2014. In an Italian art world marked by the clash between figuration and abstraction, Accardi unquestionably helped to spread a new language, a new mark-based approach that developed over time into an abstract calligraphy, a colorful, unmistaka- ble alphabet. Her stylistic evolution began from Constructivist/Concrete influences in the post- war period, but soon took a path that revolved around the mark. And after early paintings in black and white, Accardi quickly began experimenting with luminescent hues.
After her first few years of work and the inter- national recognition that came from her participation in the 1964 Venice Biennale, Accardi began painting on a range of different supports: stretchers, paper, and plastic surfaces such as sicofoil offered a new field where she could investigate light and transparency in painting, opening up a frontier beyond two-dimensionality.
Landon Metz was born in 1985 in Phoenix, Arizona. His work unquestionably draws inspiration from the desert expanses of his youth, vast plains baked by a sun that scorches the land and dazzles the eye. Green and blue are the iconic colors of his early paintings, evoking hues from the landscapes of memory.
Even at first glance, one can see the influence that Art Informel and Abstract Impressionism have exerted on this artist. Color fields rest lightly on unprimed canvas. Repetition, unpredictability, rhythm: variations on a theme that is endlessly reinvented.
His paintings grow out of a performative process evocative of a mantra, a dance. The artist builds his stretchers himself, like a rite of initiation prior to entering the creative phase of work. The stretched canvas is laid on the table. Silent movements, simple, precise methods: industrial dyes diluted with water fall onto the canvas, into the area outlined by a drawing. Then Metz quickly guides the flow of paint, corralling it within the predetermined shape.
The outcome is highly unpredictable, despite the repeated nature of the mark: his work is the result of an operation that is mechanical, but also instinctive. The temperature, light, and atmosphere of his studio all influence the color fields. And now that he has moved to New York, this color has begun to shift in new directions.
Carla Accardi was born in 1924 in Trapani and she lived in Rome until 2014. Her work is part, between others, of these important collections: Centre George Pompidou, Collezione FRAC, Museo d’arte moderna e contemporanea, Bonn, Museum Of Modern Art, Museo Sprengel, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Beirut, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice and in Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Rome. Accardi’s work has appeared in many solo exhibitions such as in Fondazione Malvina Menegaz per le Arti e le Culture, Castelbasso, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow, Museo Carlo Bilotti. Aranciera di Villa Borghese, Rome and in MACRO Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma. Moreover she exhibited in group shows in Fondazione Prada in Milan and in Shanghai, in Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudego, in NOW, MOCA in Shanghai and in Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1985, Metz has lived in Brooklyn since 2009. Metz’s work has appeared in solo exhibitions in Norway, Italy, Denmark and Canada. In 2014, he was the artist in residence at the ADN Collection in Bolzano, Italy. In 2018, Metz was the subject of a solo exhibition at Museo Pietro Canonica in Rome. Metz was recently featured in the group exhibitions Blue, at The Nassau County Museum of Art in New York, and Greffes, curated by Pier Paolo Pancotto at Villa Medici in Rome. His solo show Clarity is open at Francesca Minini until the end of July 2020.
